The Homemade Peanut Butter

JUMP TO RECIPE

I know what you’re thinking, four ingredients, are you serious?  Why should I even try this recipe?  I get it.  But hear me out, Jim’s been making this homemade peanut butter recipe for our family for years.  Last summer, we took it along with us to our annual extended family vacation.  No big deal, everyone brings their food items along and it becomes a giant communal feast.  Well, this peanut butter was gone real quick, much faster than the week lasted.  We didn’t really think anything of it until after the vacation.  The family group chat exploded over this peanut butter.  Can I have the recipe?  Is it hard to prepare?  Why haven’t I been making this my entire life?  You guys should set up a stand at the farmer’s market.  We have some branding ideas for you.  And on, and on, and on.  What’s crazy about this recipe is how simple and quick it is.  I think we get so used to a million ingredients in all our foods, that when we scale something back to its original form, it honestly surprises us how delicious something can be.  But as a forewarning, if you don’t want to make homemade peanut butter for the rest of your life, don’t even go down this road.  This is one of those recipes that will have you turning your nose up at store bought food on first taste.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you…

Benefits of Peanut Butter

  1. Protein – Peanut Butter is rich in protein.  A standard 2 tablespoon serving size boasts 7-8 grams of protein.  The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of protein for men is 56 grams per day.  The RDA for women is 46 grams per day.

2. Micronutrients – Peanut Butter offers essential micronutrients including Vitamin E, Potassium, Magnesium, and Antioxidants.

3. Weight Management – Peanut Butter contains dietary fiber, protein, and fat.  This powerful combination slows the digestive system, curbs appetite, and aids in watching that figure.

4. Heart Health – Peanut Butter contains polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats.  This combination can help lower blood pressure and LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol).

Tips for Creating Peanut Butter Made for YOU

  1. Sweeteners – For this recipe, we included our most common and basic sweetener, honey.  But this is definitely a place where you can have some fun.  Maple syrup, molasses, sweetened condensed milk, and various forms of sugar will work.  But, full disclosure, over the years we have tried everything.  There have been times when our peanut butter has had rainbow bits floating throughout from the leftover Halloween candy Jim decided to throw in for funsies.  Obviously, the more you do of this, the unhealthier it will be.  But, I don’t think it’s the end of the world to have a little fun once in awhile.
  2. Just Keep Moving Forward – It might take you a few tries to get YOUR perfect peanut butter, but you will get there, I promise.  Your peanuts will go from whole to chopped to powder to dough ball, but just keep blending.  If it’s too dry, add more peanut oil.  It it’s too creamy, next time hold back a little.  You will arrive at your perfect recipe and you will not regret it.
  3. Creamy or Chunky – Our recipe is written to create a creamy peanut butter.  If you prefer chunky, simply hold onto about a handful of peanuts in the beginning.  Wait until the rest of your peanut butter is smooth and creamy, then stir or pulse the remaining handful into the batch.
  4. Storage – Your peanut butter creation should be kept in the refrigerator in a glass airtight container.  It will thicken slightly in the fridge.  The peanut butter will be good for several months, if it lasts that long… 😊

*** Always check your peanut butter to make sure it has not gone bad.  Do not consume if it starts to project an unusual smell, taste, or appearance.
